Evaluation of Methods for Non-coherent Integration
of SNR in Radar Signal Processing

Carl Piva

Master Thesis, Report UPTEC 95140E, 50 pp, December 1995.

Abstract:
The signal to noise ratio (SNR) of a target can be improved, i.e. the range of the radar can be increased, if consistent properties of the target movement in the signal space are exploited. To achieve this improvement Non Coherent Integration techniques can be used.

The scope of this report is to investigate some properties of an Adaptive Filter Algorithm (AFA) and the Hough transform in two dimensions. The methods have been applied to two different radar systems; one airborne surveillance radar and one ground based radar. The results indicate that with the use of Non Coherent Methods, it is possible to detect targets at a lower SNR ratio than if conventional techniques were to be used.

Keywords: radar; non coherent integaration; NCI; adaptive filters; Hough transform; AFA.
