Steering and Stabilization of Symbols of a Helmet Mounted Display by a Prediction Method Based on Kalman Filtering

Abstract:
This report studies the possibility to improve the presentation of symbols on a helmet mounted display.

Time lags in the flight simulator system are examined. To compensate for time lags, a head movement predictor based on a Kalman filter is used.

Tests in the simulator and analyses in Matlab show the ability of the predictor to follow a head movement. The predictor has been implemented in the simulator and the filter parameters in the tracker system have been adjusted to reduce the noise sensitivity.
