The development of the framework for Internet applications has mainly
been focused on wireline applications. This has lead to systems that are
not well optimized for wireless links. In this Master's thesis project the
aim has been to develop a system on the application layer which optimizes
some aspects for web browsing (using HTTP).
In any environment where lack of bandwidth is an obstacle for short response
times perceived by an end-user, the desire is to decrease the amount of
data sent. The system developed uses delta encoding of already cached data
as a means for achieving this objective. Several delta encoding algorithms
have been incorporated in an architecture that makes it possible to easily
switch between the different algorithms. It also uses data compression when
delta encoding is not feasible.
Tests have been performed which show promising results in terms of perceived
end-user bitrate and a significant reduction of the amount of data transferred.
